Choosing the Right Kitchen Sink

Choosing the Right Kitchen Sink

Every kitchen has one, maybe two! And choosing the right one for your new kitchen is an important task.

Every kitchen has one, maybe two! And choosing the right one for your new kitchen is an important task. Kitchen sinks come in all shapes, sizes, colors and can serve different functions that go beyond washing pots and pans. When you're choosing a kitchen sink think beyond personal style. Think about what you will be using the sink for and how it will be incorporated into your day to day activities. Whether you're building a new home, or conducting a kitchen remodel, here are a few things to consider as you address your need for a new kitchen sink.

Number of Bowls

Traditionally kitchen sinks have been known to have two bowls, often for washing and rinsing dishes. These days most homes are equipped with a dishwasher and the only things being washed in the sink are large pots and pans, and of course food! Recently it has become popular to use a sink that features one oversized bowl and one small bowl. This provides room for washing the larger kitchenware, as well as place to rinse your vegetables.

Kitchen Sink Types

Sinks are often made from stainless steel and cast iron and these are the most popular options. Enamel coated cast iron sinks have a long history as the standard when it comes to kitchen sinks and are often thought of as one of the most beautiful sinks on the market today. However they wear and scratch much easier than stainless steel. Stainless steel sinks are easy to clean and are lightweight making them easy to mount in different situations. They can be finished in different coats, but they are often thought to be loud sinks. There are other types of sinks on the market such as composite sinks made of polyester and acrylic. While these sinks are fashionable and available in many colors they aren't thought to be nearly as durable.

It is important to consider the type of faucet that your sink will have. Remember, the less levers, the less moving parts, which means there is a smaller chance of something going wrong. While sinks with two handles, one for hot and one for cold are traditionally more beautiful a single lever sink can serve the same purpose, generally at a lower price. Many experts agree that having a spray arm is important for filling pots and rinsing the sink.

Of course it is important that whatever you choose matches the rest of your kitchen and there are many different styles of kitchen sinks, but is it important to you for the function of your sink to outlast the style?
